WCT Domestic Abuse Task Force
Woodlands Community Temple, working with Greenburgh Interfaith, has teamed up with HOPE'S DOOR (formerly known as the Northern Westchester Shelter) to help victims of domestic abuse to transition out of the shelter and restart their lives.
Our goals are to provide transitional assistance to families leaving the shelter for their own homes; to provide support for the shelter residents through training, education, life skills; and to bring education on the issue of domestic abuse and healthy relationships to the WCT community.

Thank you to all who donated housewares, food, and pantry supplies for our most recent family. Mom and her four kids, including a newborn baby boy, greatly appreciated our help and generosity. Thanks also to the families at the nursery school at JCC on the Hudson for donating gently used car seats and strollers to three shelter families.
Many thanks as well to all who helped during Christmas by providing gifts for the families we have recently placed. A big round of applause to the WOODSY group that collected gifts for the kids and helped to deliver them to Mount Vernon on Christmas Eve. You were Santa for those kids. They may never know it, but their mom will always rememebr what you did for her family.
We have recently gotten a request from Hope's Door to help provide baby items for two pregnant mom's staying in the shelter. Email domesticabuse@wct.org if you would like to help with this project.
Volunteers are always needed at the shelter to provide childcare while parents attend classes. If you are interested in helping out, please email Crystal Giuriceo, Hope's Door's childrens' counselor, at krysanne1@optonline.net (and cc to domesticabuse@wct.org). For security purposes, all volunteers must complete an application.

How You Can Help
*Donate items needed by shelter families for their new homes. Join our mailing list by emailing domesticabuse@wct.org and we'll let you know when we have specific needs for a family.
*Donate time. Want to provide childcare at the shelter, help settle a new family or be a family liaison for us? Send us an email and we’ll help you to get started, or speak with Co-Chairs Jenna Lebowich, Judy Steifel, and Bill Woolis for more information. We have lots of ways for you to get involved, and welcome creative ideas for new projects that support our three main goals.
*Donate gift cards to discount stores (Sears, Target, etc.), Bed Bath and Beyond and grocery stores (Stop & Shop, A&P, ShopRite). We have a mailbox outside the office.
*Donate money to the Social Action DATF fund to support the work that we do. Send a check to the temple or donate on line through the temple web site. Funds are used to purchase needed items for families as well as to support special needs. Please consider DATF for your holiday and simcha tzedakah contributions.

Hope's Door needs our help to provide childcare for residents' children while their mothers are taking classes.
The shelter provides a variety of educational programs to the women who live there, all with the goal of empowering them to break free from the cycle of violence and move on to safe and self-sufficient lives. Classes are offered during both daytime and evening hours, and volunteers are needed for all time slots - both teenagers and adults are welcome to help out. B'nai Mitzvah students welcome! Click here for the current Calendar of Events.
Have a talent to share? Come teach a class or work with the resident families.
You can teach a craft (knitting, sewing, cooking), a life skill (managing money, reading, computers), or provide a treat (beauty treatments, outings, celebrations). You don't have to be a professional, just willing to share your skill or knowledge with others.
If you are interested in volunteering your time, please contact the DATF committee at Domesticabuse@wct.org, or contact Penny and Crystal at the shelter directly by calling 1-888-438-8700 or e-mail to krysanne1@optonline.net.
To ensure the safety of the Hope's Door residents, all volunteers will be required to fill out and submit an application and references. Hope's Door will provide the shelter location once your application is accepted.
